Former American Idol contestant C.J. Harris dies at Walker County hospital - AL.com

Former American Idol contestant Curtis “C.J.” Harris died Sunday at a Walker County hospital.

Walker County Coroner Joey Vick said Harris, 31, was taken to Walker Baptist Medical Center in medical distress. CPR was performed on the former singer, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.

An autopsy on Harris has been done, but further testing is needed to determine the cause of his death.

In 2014, Harris was a country-soul singer who placed sixth during season 13 of the reality series. During his time on the show, Harris performed “Soulshine” by the Allmans, “Trouble,” by LaMontagne, “Too Close” for groups, “Whipping Post” for the Final Judgment. Also, Harris displayed his soul chops with a rendition of Sam Cooke’s “Bring It On Home to Me.”

The judges praised Harris’ real-deal vibe and emotional conviction. “You sing because you have to sing, not because you want to sing,” Keith Urban once told Harris. “That’s why it’s so believable and real. … I just believed it and I felt it.”

In 2016, Harris was charged with three counts of distribution of a controlled substance. The Walker County Sheriff’s Office said Harris allegedly sold marijuana and Oxycodone.

Harris pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of possession the following year and received a suspended sentence.
