Everything Everywhere All at Once cleaned up at the 38th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards, winning seven awards, including best feature.
Stars Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan each collected another award to add to their hauls, taking home best lead performance and best supporting performance, respectively, while Stephanie Hsu won best breakthrough performance. The film’s writer-directors, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, won the Spirit Awards for best director and best screenplay, while Stephanie Hsu was the winner of best breakthrough performance. Everything Everywhere also won for Paul Rogers’ editing work.
Heading into the show, Everything Everywhere All at Once led the film nominations with eight nods, winning every category in which is was nominated. Jamie Lee Curtis also was nominated but lost to Quan for best supporting performance.
On the TV side, The Bear was named best new scripted series, with the series’ Ayo Edebiri taking home the award for best supporting performance in a new scripted series. Abbott Elementary star and creator Quinta Brunson added to her own awards haul, winning best lead performance in a new scripted series.
As per tradition, the show took place inside a tent on the beach in Santa Monica. The ceremony, hosted by Hasan Minhaj, was streamed live on the Film Independent’s YouTube channel as well as on IMDb’s YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. (Check out the star-studded red carpet arrivals here.)
This year, Film Independent did away with gender-specific acting categories, replacing best actor/actress and supporting actor/actress with gender-neutral categories with the same combined number of nominees. The new categories, best lead performance and best supporting performance, each feature 10 nominees.
Also during the ceremony, Sarah Polley’s Women Talking received the Robert Altman Award, which is given to a film’s director, casting director and ensemble cast. Pachinko received the award for best ensemble cast in a new scripted series.
